I am sure you have heard repeatedly how important consistency is when you are trying to make a change in your life. Even though we KNOW we should be consistent, it can often be difficult to actually put consistency into practice because sometimes it just feels like life gets in the way. In addition, sometimes consistency can feel boring because you are doing the same things day in and day out. The other day I was listening to the podcast “Increase your impact” with Justin Su’a and he gave three benefits to consistently that I felt were good reminders as to why it’s so important:
- Consistency builds habits – The more often we do something, the more likely it will become a habit. Then once it becomes a habit, it requires less discipline and just becomes who you are rather than something you must think about.
- Consistency gives you a sense of control – With all the uncertainty around us, consistency can give you an anchor to the present which can help you feel more in control.
- Consistency leads to trust – Think about a person whom you trust. That person probably became trustworthy in your eyes because of the consistency they show you by things such as always doing what they said they were going to do, etc. Not only do you want to have trustworthy people in your life, but you want to be that trustworthy person to others.
On those days when you are doing the same thing for the hundredth time, and want to say “screw it”, bring these reasons back up on your mind because we all want to build healthy habits, have a sense of control in our life, and to be a trustworthy person!
